Work books

Introduction

The club has some work books, and more are in development. These lead you through the questions to ask, and highlight the possible answers available to you in many cases.

In effect work books are semi intelligent collections of linked forms, with a path that allows you, by answering questions, and making choices to define the types of property, build styles and more, as well as identifying the budget, means of funding and a whole range of other factors.

These do not duplicate information within the tutorial section, but provide a structured approach to your own research and decision making process. Work books take a number of different forms, from defining your needs, through appraising build sites, to managing a build.

Work books, although each complete in its own right, are printed on A4 hole punched paper, so that you can add them to a ring binder, documenting the decisions and experience you have gained.

How big are they

Work books can be of any size from a few pages to a lot of pages. Each has a specific function covering a particular topic area. Some may point you in the direction of others to move on to.

So who needs work books

We, as you will realize, do not have a conveyor belt approach, but feel that each person should be treated as an individual, and because of this we do not feel you all should necessarily work through all of the work books.

Work books, can be useful even if you don't want to completely follow the philosophy behind them and complete sections, in that they show you many of the questions you should be considering.

Many of the work books are designed to help you to make your own decisions, and where you already have, there is no need to go down these routes. In many cases specific work books will not be of any use to you, for example there would be no point in looking at different types of bricks, styles, ways bricks can be used decoratively, and calculations to work out how many bricks needed to be allowed for in your budget, if the building style you have chosen does not involve bricks.

On your first meeting with the consultant to work towards defining your own profile, where he feels you would benefit, he will suggest work books that you should look at. Its entirely up to you if you choose this route or some other way to reach your decisions. From this point forward as a need arises, or you need more knowledge, we will be looking with you at how you achieve this, be it through the web site, your own research or using other work books.

Why work books are not on this web site

At the moment we are not putting work books on the web site or supplying them to non members, the reasoning behind this is that although a great tool, we can see that some people might put too much reliance upon them, and while we can try to think of many situations and options, they cannot ever present a total solution.

We don't want anyone to believe that this alone provides all that is needed to complete a project successfully. Some work books in preparation also cover skills, such as designing the wiring of a home, and while being developed from a planning perspective, to allow you to understand better how things work, and the options available to you, we are not suggesting that completing it means anyone can wire a house, with no other electrical skill or experience.
