We have decided to greatly expand the links section to become a section of a portal. Rather than do this on our own we have teamed up with start page a web site that has many portals at this time, but also a shared data and system philosophy they call 'friendly systems'. The effect of being a 'friendly system' is that data is presented in a similar way and can be drawn upon and included in any website that also is equipped to include friendly system data.
An example of this is www.best-of-the-best.co.uk that can be viewed as a stand alone system or viewed as a section within www.start-page.co.uk although these two sites are developed by the same people and together with UKlist and others are now all really a part of start page.
We are going a stage further than best-of-the-best in that we are developing a compatible collection of button pages to fit directly into start page itself and will be a section from its main menu as well as being available from this web site.
This has a number of advantages in that we can make our portal information available to a wider audience but also we get access to all the links from the existing friendly systems, so will for example be able to pull up links to all newspapers, local councils and a wide range of other specialists as well as general portal systems.
So when will this be available here. We are not absolutely sure, we are hoping early next year (2005) we are not held up by others just the amount of time we can put into sorting out all the extra links and testing them all out.
We are still considering the supplier database we have, and looking to see if this could also be combined into this, as start page pages have the ability to show background lists or pages that could provide any more specific information. We have some experiments planned over the xmas new year period, that may allow us to say better what way this is to go.
