The best normal response web address to use on all press articles is www.self-build.org.uk
Below we look at how we can deal with larger response levels and other arrangements we can make to give your readers as good a response as possible.
A lot of times when a large circulation publication runs a website address there is the risk that the servers cannot cope with the demand. This can occur on any size operation from the Governments site to provide historic census information for those interested in family history, and major features on the BBC site down to smaller local sites.
Being aware that this can happen and that we need to be able to make information available to as many people as possible, we have a number of solutions to overcome the potential problem.
Both our main UK site www.self-build-homes-club.co.uk and a smaller UK media response site www.self-build.org.uk has multi server support, this means that it is not a single server but a cluster of servers that service enquiries giving a greater chance of providing a fast and complete service. These servers are based in a UK center with probably the largest internet capacity in Europe.
The smaller specialist media response site, www.self-build.org.uk has sufficient capacity to normally cover the response we will get from several local newspapers or a mention in a larger circulation publication without any difficulty. Similarly most monthly publications will not create it a problem as the response is spread over time. It has pages that are designed to load very quickly and are complete pages, rather than frame based pages that load in sections. This site has all the information a person first taking an interest in having a new home built, or affordable homes will want to know, but without all the vast amount of detail on our main site. If they find this sufficiently interesting they will automatically be forwarded to our main site. This site is therefore the best one to send readers, viewers or listeners to in most cases. So far this site has always had sufficient capacity to handle all who wanted to see it.
If you wish to run the www.self-build-homes-club.co.uk It is helpful if you know when coverage will occur, if it is possible for you to let us know, even if only an estimate, so that where a number of articles are to occur at the some time we can keep an eye on the load and switch in more resources should the need arise. This site has a front door index and then handles the large load by sharing across sub webs each supported but an array of servers, however it uses frame pages, and although this makes it nice to use, it does mean that there is more risk of the capacity of this site being exceeded. So far we have kept capacity well above demand.
You can also get directly to the start of either web sites without going through the front doors if you wish. These direct entries to sub webs are www.public.self-build.org.uk to get directly into the small site and www.public.self-build-homes-club.co.uk to get directly into the larger one.
Larger response rates
If a far larger response is expected then in addition to these two sites, we can put up very quickly, when needed, extra servers or collections of servers. This is easily archived as our main sites are index sites, that beyond the front door screen is feeding to an array of servers supporting sub webs, giving us a very large capacity, we can increase the number of sub webs and distribution as necessary. We have a number of spare web addresses already registered, most routinely just send all who use them automatically to one of our other sites, but can be brought into use when needed. This also means that if a person came across an old article then they would get to a relevant copy of our web site, even if not as set up as at an earlier time.
Specific response
If an article is on a specific topic or the feature relates to some new projects or something specific to a local area, we can set up a specific response server/group of servers. In most cases this is not a major website development, it just involves a slight readjustment of a copy of the media response site, probably with a page or two added, or pages copied from our main site. We can usually get this done and loaded within 24 hours and often far faster. In addition to our main website address we do have some others we can use already registered, plus can create sub webs of any of our sites. Another way we can achieve the same effect is by using a directory name after the web address and the server then automatically looks for a file called default or index with the right extensions on that directory. This directory name could be as simple as a postcode prefix, so to create a special entry point for readers of a Gloucester newspaper it could be www.self-build-homes-club.co.uk/gl. This example is set up to see, but of course others we need to set this up when required, and to tell you what the web address will be for your specific response. We have no problem in doing this and this can often be done extremely quickly, many times in under an hour.
If you want something special please ask - we will help where we can. We have web site development ability available to us all the time, a number of web sites already registered - some unused at this time, arrangements where we can have unlimited numbers of sub webs and servers.
